Worcester
is the county town of Worcestershire, situated 30 miles southwest of
Birmingham, 29 miles north of Gloucester, and has an estimated
population of 94,300 people. The River Severn runs through the middle of
the city, overlooked by the 12th century Worcester Cathedral. Worcester
is famed for the final battle of the Civil War where Oliver Cromwell's
New Model Army defeated King Charles I's Cavaliers. Worcester is also
the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain and the late composer Sir Edward
Elgar.
