with a population of over 239,000 and with a wider urban area population
of 251,000 making it the 13th largest city in England. Traditionally a
major industrial centre with mining, production of steel, locks,
motorcycles and cars, today the major industries within the city are
engineering (including a large aerospace industry) and the service
sector.
